After roughing out several thumbnail sketches, the composition was drawn on 140# watercolor paper. I did not put in too many details at this point. The paper was soaked with water and allowed to dry several times, to avoid buckling. Next, the flowers and the American Goldfinch were masked out, and I painted the background with a mixture of dry pigments mixed with water and gum arabic. I try to keep this part loose and fun, just indicating impressions of a chaotic background. As the painting progresses, you will see the background receed with the adding of details in the foreground and in the focal point - which is obviously to be the bird and the central iris.

Along with beginning to lay in color for the flowers, I decided to help recede the background by adding a light wash of indigo over the original pigment.

I will spend the next several days deciding if this is done!
