Joyce graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and received an Associates Degree in 1969 and has been producing graphics, ads, logos and all types of 'print media' ever since.  For the last six years, Joyce and her husband lived in Hawaii, the island of Maui and owned a sign shop. There she managed to paint a minimum of 20 hours a week along with working full time commercially.  The Mecks are currently in Pennsylvania, for a few years, and anticipate returning to Hawaii permanently to retire. Joyce is looking forward to being able to paint full time.

In Her Own Words...

"I usually use either 140# or 300# acid free archival papers, and watercolor is my medium. I like Maimeri colors from Italy or Koi colors from Japan, as they are 'pure' and brilliant. I also use the old reliable standbys like Grumbacher, Schmieke and Windsor Newton. All the colors I use are rated excellent for color light-fastness. All my mat boards are archival as well. Much of my work is framed in Koa wood from Hawaii."

"I am considered a realist, as opposed to an impressionist or abstract artist. While my subject is true to form, I will sometimes 'pour', spatter or throw paint on the backgrounds for a more informal effect. I often use many glazing layers to achieve a color or effect, maintaining the transparent look of watercolor. Occasionaly, I use watercolor without thinning, giving a nearly opaque finish. I also use acrylic inks, acrylics, casine, and dry pigments."

"Artists are influenced by many things, especially other artists. I admire a number of artists, and all have a different technique or style. I love all things Oriental, especially Chinese. There is peace and serenity there, whereas most western art seems to have an architectural feel, hard and bold. Nature is my biggest inspriation, though. I can look at the same mountain every day and it is always different, and the sea never rests. Rather than being labeled as a realist, or any other type of artist, I would much rather be known as an artist who was successful at executing what I tried to accomplish. I would have to say that literally every piece I attempt is an exercise in something new (for me, at least), and hopefully, I have been successful invoking a timeless feeling of being one with nature in my audience."

"With my art, I want to get up close and personal with nature, and show something one might not usually take the time to really 'see'. I paint what inspires me, with all it's splendor, detail and mood, not to duplicate, but to appreciate."

"Composition is of great importance to me, and the use of negative space is equally valuable as the positive. Depth, light and shadow, and color balance can make or break a painting."

"I hope you enjoyed the gallery. Please visit often."
